Chartered Security Professional (CSyP)
A recognised benchmark for strategic security competence.
Chartered Security Professional (CSyP) is a prestigious professional recognition awarded to experienced security practitioners who demonstrate competence, integrity, and strategic impact.
The Association of Security Consultants is a licensed body responsible for administering the Register of Chartered Security Professionals on behalf of the Worshipful Company of Security Professionals (WCoSP), under Royal Charter.
What is CSyP?
Security is a high-trust profession, and consultants work at the point where risk, resilience, governance, and operational reality collide.
CSyP provides:
- Independent validation of competence and professional standing
- Increased confidence for clients and stakeholders
- Recognition of strategic influence, not simply experience
- A clear indicator of professionalism and ethical discipline
- Commitment to continued development and high standards
For consultants, it can also support credibility in competitive markets, public sector procurement, and work requiring demonstrable professional standing.
How CSyP aligns with the ASC
The Association of Security Consultants (ASC) is the UK’s leading professional body for independent security consultants, built on professional vetting, ethics, and ongoing CPD.
CSyP and the ASC membership complement each other:
- The ASC membership demonstrates professional belonging within a community of independent consultants and confirms adherence to the ASC standards and independence principles.
- CSyP registration provides an additional layer of formal recognition by validating competence through the Chartered Register.
Many practitioners who pursue CSyP also choose to maintain professional membership through organisations such as the ASC, strengthening their professional credibility and ongoing development.
CSyP Competencies
Every Chartered Security Professional is assessed against five core areas of competence:
In addition, registrants must demonstrate that they are delivering strategic impact in their role, meaning their work drives meaningful security outcomes at organisational or sector level.
CSyPs must show they meet the required standards across all five areas :
1. Security Knowledge
A thorough understanding of security principles, risks, threats, and protective measures.
2. Practical Application
Demonstrating how knowledge is applied effectively in real-world security contexts.
3. Communication
Clear and credible communication with clients, stakeholders, and decision-makers.
4. Leadership
Professional leadership, influence, and responsibility for security outcomes.
5. Personal Commitment
Demonstrated commitment to professionalism, ethics, and continual improvement.
Typical steps include:
- Expression of Interest
- Evidence Submission against the competency framework
- Assessment and Peer Review
- Professional Interview
- Admission to the Register (successful applicants)
Applications vary in length depending on experience, evidence quality, and assessor availability.
Application Process (Overview)
